The father/son relationship then becomes a principal part of Amir’s redemption and growth, as he tries to become a father to Sohrab by rescuing him from Assef and adopting him. We never see Sohrab and Hassan together, but it is explained that Hassan was a good father before his death. Sohrab becomes the “son” figure of the latter part of the novel. Hassan being a Hazara has constant opposition throughout his life. Baba’s great sin is committing adultery with Ali ’s wife, and he is Hassan ’s real father. Perhaps he enjoyed the new life of American more and was grateful. It reveals that Amir does not feel as much hostility toward the Russians as Baba did. It foreshadows a future run in with a Russian that could end very badly for the aging man. Baba was drinking his problems away and it is quite apparent that Russia is still an issue he will never be able to let go. Hassans promise to get the kite, and the promise that he would do it a thousand times over serves as a reminder of how very different Amir and Hassan were. ![]() He is still a fighter when it comes down to it and not even America could change that. It is significant because an old side of Baba is shown. It reveals that Baba is not all hard and uptight any more. It foreshadows the move to California a good thing for their relationship because they are the only ones who truly understand each other and what one another have gone through. It stood out because it was one of the first kind and full-hearted things I think I have ever heard Baba say. It adds for the first time a caring tone to Baba, which I feel he had a harder less understanding personality back in Peshawar.
